Frog Songs

Michigan is home to 13 species of frogs, almost all of which can be found in Washtenaw County. These amphibians are not only adorable, but they are also crucial links in the food chain and critical indicators of healthy ecosystems.  Learn about the various species, their habitats, and how to identify them by their individual and unique calls.

Michigan's Aquatic Mammals

Michigan is home to four distinct semi-aquatic furbearers: fur producing mammals that have adapted to freshwater habitats and complete their life cycle in or near water. They are among the most enjoyable wild animals to observe, but many people find identifying them to be confusing, especially as they often appear to be swimming blobs of fluff. Learn about all of these furry fellows: their differences, similarities, and the very important roles they play in the ecosystem. Skulls and skins provided for examination.

Michigan's Canids

Foxes, wolves, and coyotes are all members of the Canidae family, but each species is unique and special. They are all Michigan residents as well. Canids are known for their keen sense of smell and are found in diverse habitats ranging from forests to deserts. Learn about the similarities and differences of these remarkable creatures. Michigan Turtles

Blandings and painteds and snappers, oh my! Michigan is home to 10 different turtle species, several of which live here in Washtenaw County. Learn all about these ancient, fascinating reptiles, including their unique adaptations, habitats, diet, and how they've managed to survive for over 250 million years. Shell specimens will be available for examination.

Vernal Pools

Often called the coral reefs of the northern woods, vernal pools are unique and critical seasonal wetlands. Unravel their mystery by learning how to properly identify, interact with, and protect these delicate and magical habitats which serve as both homes and essential breeding grounds to many animals,  Focus is on the blue spotted salamanders, spotted salamanders, wood frogs, and fairy shrimp. All sampling equipment provided.
